The Toe River Conference basketball tournament got underway last week in spite of a delay forced by Mother Nature. The tourney’s first round games were postponed due to the snow the area received on Wednesday but once action got underway at Cranberry Middle School the top seeds proceeded to prove that the regular season standings right.
In the opening round of the boy’s tournament #4 seed Bowman (6-4 regular season) beat #5 seed East Yancey (1-9) 41-35 and #3 seed Avery Middle (6-4) topped #6 seed Cranberry (1-9) to move on to the second round.
Bowman faced #1 seed Cane River (9-1) and Avery took on #2 seed Harris (7-3) in the semifinals on Monday night. The Rebels and the Devils received first round byes after battling all season for the league’s top spot.
The Boys championship game is set for Tuesday night at 6:30.
In the girls bracket, #1 seed Avery Middle (8-2) and #2 seed Cranberry (7-3) set out the first round after winning their regular season finals to remain on top of the league standings.
Avery faced off against #5 seed Cane River (3-7), an up set winner over #4 seed East Yancey (5-5) in the opening round, in a semifinal game on Monday night. Cranberry took on #3 seed Bowman (7-3) in the semis after the Lady Bulldogs beat #6 seed Harris (0-10) in their first round match up.
Cane River and East Yancey split games in the TRC regular season finale last week. The Lady Panthers topped the Lady Rebels 25-16 and the Rebels hammered the Panthers 44-15 to win bragging rights for their teams over their cross town rivals.
